Forget about Barbie dolls, Transformer toys, and even G.I. Joe, this Christmas children want what mommy and daddy have, a locked and loaded AR-15 ready to rip apart human-sized silhouette targets representing the “opposition.” A small group calling itself “The Oregon 51st Constitutional Militia” has been conducting live-fire drills and practicing tactical maneuvers deep in the state’s densely wooden forests. The organization currently consists of approximately one hundred men, women, and, yes, children, all of whom stand ready to defend the constitution while hoping to combat the Obama administration’s systematic abuse of land rights, gun rights, freedom of speech and other liberties.
They call themselves patriots; the government calls them dangerous, delusional and violent. They insist they are a peaceful people, wanting only to restore America to its greatness. Through active recruiting and a thorough vetting process, their recruitment efforts are paying off as people from all walks of life–painters, lawyers, doctors, and homeless people–seem anxious to join the movement.
Founding member Peter Prescott was quoted as saying, “We stand ready to repel all who oppose freedom, enemies both foreign and domestic,” adding that he perceives the Obama regime, and potentially a Clinton controlled White House, as the true enemies of the American People, not fabricated adversaries like ISIS or the Russians. The federal government, Prescott said, is willing to engage in unprovoked aggression against its own people. They remain convinced that Hillary Clinton, if elected, will further Obama’s “progressive” policies. They say that tough economic times that have already inflamed anti-government anger will spiral out of control, ultimately resulting in skirmishes or, possible, a coup against a dangerous Hillary Clinton.
Hidden in the Oregon forest, surrounded by spruce and Douglas Fir trees, Nathan Schwartz, his wife, and eight-year-old daughter practice firing their weapons. Every weekend, they pack their armored SUV with weapons, ammunition, and meals-ready-to-eat, and join their brethren for weekend war games. Schwartz, who has belonged to the militia for several years, is proud to report that the group’s membership continues to thrive. “We gettin’ new recruits every day,” he said. “Lots of ex-military, ex-law enforcement, people who don’t like that guy in the White House or that nasty Hillary lady.”
When asked how the militia would react to a Trump-controlled White House, Schwartz smiled and said, “Oh, we like Trump very much. He make America great again is the only hope for this country to pick itself up again so we can be the greatest place in the world.” Our Oregon source inquired about membership requirements, to which Schwartz replied, “We happy to accept anyone who denounces that Obama man’s policies and lives life according to the constitutional values. The only real requirement is that within six months of joining, every member must purchase an AR-15. I getting’ my daughter one for Christmas, since it’s a holy day.”
Most Oregon militia members share Schwartz’s views.
A lot of the movement’s roots stem from the 1990s confrontation between innocent civilians and federal agents at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and in Waco, Texas, that resulted in the senseless death of over 90 people, including many children. An additional boost in membership is attributed to the 2014 stand off at Clive Bundy’s Nevada Ranch, where federal agents threatened to kill Bundy when he refused to remove his grazing cattle from alleged federal land.
Founding militia member Peter Prescott lives out of his RV and is constantly travelling, to prevent the government from pinpointing his location. “I don’t stand still,” he said. “I am not giving them a chance to zero in on me. No matter what happens, we won’t back down. We won’t start a fight, but we sure as hell will finish it. We’re readying our teams of ten.”
“Teams of 10?” our source asked.
“I can’t talk about that without group consensus,” Prescott said. “Maybe next time.”
